This is the blog of Gerry and Hazel as they sail to the Mediterranean via the Bay of Biscay in our yacht, Hecamede
Our current position
Hecamede
Hecamede is an Island Packet 380. She was built in Florida in 2002 and is 12 metres long. She is a long keeled yacht and is cutter rigged. Island Packets are wide beamed and heavy boats so we hope she will keep us safe. In preparation for her journey we have added new chart plotters with GPS and AIS, Navtex, and a new dinghy and life raft. She also has a new bimini, sprayhood and solar panels for the sun and a different bow and kedge anchor.
The name Hecamede appears in Homers's 'The Iliad'. She was a slave awarded to King Nestor in ancient Greece. She was described as 'skilled as a goddess, proud and fair.
N.B.Hazel would like to add here that she is NOT a slave to Gerry!!
After 4 days waiting for the winds to abate,we finally left Mazagon.headed for Chipiona By now there was a mini flotilla of yachts waiting for the break in the weather.
